As far as I'm aware there are few differences. The GSI deffo came with a 1/2 black leather interior (ash grey), and IRC there were only about 500 made.

Someone with more knowledge will probably come along in a minute but i think they story goes that the term 'GTi' was making them harder to insure/more desirable to being nicked so they changed to GSI. Could be wrong....
Rover 214 Spi - gone
Triumph Dolomite Sprint - gone
Rover 216 Gti - scrapped
Honda CRX VTEC - back on the road
Mrk1 16v CRX - v nice

Early ones certainly did, later ones were T series I believe, probably changed at the same time as the wheels.

Unless they were shipped to Japan where they were all badged GTi - regardless of year. GSi badging wasn't used there. Still had the cosmetic changes though.
They were re-badged GSi to placate the insurance companies of the time when any car with a GTi badge attracted a horrendous premium. Idea was that by calling it a GSi it would be more 'insurance friendly' and theerfore sales would be better.
