Which is your favourite Rover and why?

the coupe turbo's are nice ,but the back wheels look an inch or two too far back ...75's are an old mans car ....come on, pulling up outside 10 downing street in one ?? 200's and 400's are nice but a little dull.. got to be 600's the curves are pure , but front lights rubbish looking . BRM's are nice, tough looking , i know history says you have to have the orange air intakes at the front but ORANGE ? leave off . so for me 600's.

rover 216gti
the rover 216gti any day! honda engine baby! no worries about head gaskets although i hear there is a new head gasket for the K-series somethin about skimming the head as far as possible, painting the head with a bonder and fitting the thicker gasket.
anyway, 216GTi 89-95 Mk2 all the way!
(Must admit, i have a thing for the girt SD1's. Nice sounding beasts aswell!)

So it seems the consensus is for the 220 Coupe Turbo.
Not sure you people have actually driven an 800 MkII Vitesse Turbo, by far the better looking, comes with air con/electric heated seats/full leather and MORE power as standard. Although admittedly it needs it to carry all them extras around, lol!
I wont argue with anybody in regards to the SD1 though, lovely bus.
Steve.

My Oct 1991 Mk1 820i. Bog standard spec except the TWR kit, 16" pepperpot alloys, leather interior. One of the last MK1's ever made. The largest go-kart I ever drove.

How does it have more power than a coupe turbo as standard??

To difficult to say just one car, but the 220Gti nasp or turbo, and the Metro Gti mpi, are the 2 best cars! Nothing wrong or ugly about a Coupe turbo, but it's heavier than a 220Gti, and looks nothing like as agressive as std.
The runners up would have to be the 800 Vitesse sport coupe, and the 216/416Gti Twin cam, and even a 216 cabby with the same motor. My fave 1600cc engine ever!
I dont much like mk2 400's, mk3 200's, or 600's though generally.

Got some literature to that effect?
According to my offical rover brochure (good old ebay) the coupe turbo is 30kgs lighter than a 220gti/gsi turbo.
420gsi Turbo, gone but not forgotten.
New toy? BRG Coupe turbo with cream leather!!

My favourite is the Vitesse Fastback which has a silhouette reminiscent of the SD1. It is very fast with the T16 engine, economical to run averaging 31 mpg (40mpg at motorway legal speeds), and cavernous with the rear seats down. I can do a run to Portsmouth where my son is at University with all his worldly goods inside. I have travelled accross France in one day and got out fresh at the other end - lovely recarro seats.

Has to be the Late Vitesse 800, in saloon or fastback (or Vitesse sport) Very cheap to buy, almost as quick as a 220 coupe turbo, but the chassis can handle the power better. Also has lots of road presence. Can also be used to good effect at annoying boy racers, as they just do not expect a big old Rover to be going so fast. The 600ti is good too but it is more of a honda with a bit of rover cosmetics and a Rover engine. The Recaro's are the dogs too.
Can you think of a Better £500 car than a Vitesse / Sport? Has to be the performance bargain of the present.

A T16 turbo powered 800 is what I would certainly buy if my Ti ever went to the big scrap heap in the sky. Must be one of the most value for money cars around.
I do love the shape of the 800 coupe's, but the Vit's have those lovely recaro's...mmmmmmmmm

Personally, I prefer the big-leather-armchairs in the vit coupe to the recaros.
And yes, very good value for money. Far cheaper to insure than a 220 coupe turbo too (my insurer won't even give me an online quote for one).
I sometimes fancy the idea of 250kg weight saving, and what it would do for performance. But for day-to-day driving the vit is more comfortable, andhas lots more toys.
Perhaps an FDH 200 coupe with full leather and aircon...

Got to be the V8 SD1 for me - the epitome of Rover performance at about the time when I became interested in cars
Of the more modern breed - I would have to say that the 200 coupe has to be one of the all time best looking cars _ just love that shape

Best engine... well that depends on what you like I suppose. The turbo is obviously stupidly powerful, however brings with it the traction/reliability/cost problems. So, I'd say the best has to be a DOHC D16 coupe... honda reliability, decent speed and low cost... and these were available out the factory abroad.
However, if you're counting MGs as well, then a V8 ZT

220 GSi turbo and 420 GSi turbo. both rare, understated, undercover and pack lots of grunt when needed, and an easy daily driver. my 220GSiT pulls lots of attension because its got nice lines and and its not as common as coops. i like the ti and vitesse but both are too heavy for any decent standard(ish) power.

My favourite Rover has to be the 220 GSi Turbo. They are pretty rare things nowadays, so I can imagine people like me in a few years having to buy standard GSis and getting the T-16-Turbo engine separate and fitted professionally.
They are stunning cars though, much better than what else was on the market at the time. Astra GSis were nice, but AFAIK they never made a version with the 220BHP 'Redtop' turbo engine in it from the Cavalier, which was a shame, as it was a cracking engine. Other than the RS Cosworth, Escorts were never worth touching IMO.
Although, if it came to my favourite MG, it would be a toss up between the ZT-190 or the ZS-180 saloon.

Completely agree. It was also, by far, the best engineered - and not because of BMW but because the chief engineer, David Wade, was so passionate about it. An unsung hero in my view.Akuma wrote:Rover 75. An excellent styled car from the outside, resembles a Jag and excellent comfortable interior. Really nice car.
I had the great honour of working alongside David plus Richard Woolley (exterior) and Wynn Thomas (interior) & Peter Morgan (Project Director). Brilliant team and best couple of years of my career. I was Launch Manager.
Rover 75 has won more awards than any other car in the last 20 years. Some you never heard of. And I dare anyone to prove me wrong. Most of the trophies ended up in a cardboard box in the back of the Conference Centre. They may still be there for all I know.

Best rover was my first car at 17 a p6 v8, owned it for 4 years, had my 800 vit for 51/2 years at present, but the best i've been in is the rover 75 V8 with a chip and modded manifolds and exhaust, howls like a ferrari V8 !!, quite astonishing, it really seems like the whole package, looks, handling, power (about 350BHP) BUT 12 to a gallon!!!
