oil temp gauge
please can some one suggest the best place to insert the sensor for my oil temp gauge

I have thought for a long time about where i am going to put my oil temp sender and had many suggestions from people on RT.
Mine is a T16, i have decided to go for the sump plug adaptor which basically replaces your standard plug for one with a thread in the centre to screw the gauge sender into.
The sandwich plate on the T16 at least is going to drop the oil filter too low and risk it being damaged or knocked off completely.
Only other option really is going to be to get a thread of some kind braised into the back of the sump for you to screw a sender into, but you will probably have to have a plate or some kind of stregthening on the sump to allow you to do this without stripping the threads straight out.
What engine is it?

Oil temp is on my mind at the moment with my project car.
May pop to XPower and mess around with some bung plugs.

Can you not T into the oil feed for the turbo.....unless of course you mean a nasp T16 then you are a bit more limited i suppose & the sump it is.

Thats not really suitable as a sump plug, more the sort of thing you would weld into the back of the sump to give you a thread for the sender.

Yea most new gauges will come with a sender in the pack, You will need to buy the sender fitments, wiring, crimp connectors and a mounting pod for the gauge. If you have a electrical gauge you will need 6 ring connectors (different sizes). 1 for the sender, 1 for earth near the sender, and 4 for the back of the gauge and possibly 2 lucas connectors (depending on your decision) to join into the light circuit and ignition circuits.JamesCoupe wrote:Yeah I spotted that just after I posted![]()

You can see a couple of t-pieces on here,also a remote one.I have one of the brass ones,the conect inthe pipe then your sender threads into it.

1. Take sump off
2. Take a 1" bar of steel/brass and cut off a 5 - 8mm thick slice
3. Drill an appropriate hole, and tap an appropriate thread
4. Drill a clearance hole in the sump where you want the probe (probably low down at the back/side
5. Braze, or even weld the boss you just made on
6. Screw in sender.

It's true that the temperature wont be as accurate as in a place such as the oil filter, however IMO it makes sod all difference. It's generally going to be used as an indication as to whether the engine's warm or not, and will serve this purpose fine. The exact reading may be out, but TBH I'd be suprised if these type of plastic gauges are very accurate anyway.

I agree that most of us dont pay enough to get very accurate gauges.
Fitting the oil temp sender in the oil pump housing doesnt work so how accurate can it be in a sandwich plate ?
The sump plug with thread for the sender should be fine though and alot less hassle then drilling out the sump itself. i've had a look and dont see any reason why it should get ripped out unless you rally the car which ill not be doing,lol
