I think there are some really nice Vauxhalls out there, they're not *all* shite but the brand does tend to make very bland, boring cars designed to get you from A to B and nothing more.... some would say this is kind of what Rover were well known for to but they also had there moments to!

Examples of good GM's (IMO):

Omega 3.0 MV6/Elite - 210bhp, RWD
Vectra 2.5 ST/GSi
Cavilier GSiT
Corsa VX-R

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to things like this to and wouldn't ever think about XE'n a Rover... a good engine but for the effort Vs result it's deffo not woth the cost (IMO) when the T16 turbo is there. If you're gonna do an engine hack then make sure it's a worthwhile hack - we've just put a blown 20v unit from an ex-Cup Leon Cupra R in the front of a Mk1 Clio for a giggle and we're hoping for slightly more than 300bhp from it.

A friend did one with a similar engine from the S3 and that ran 280bhp all day long without any issues and it really upset alot of Evo owners on a Donnington track day

I was actually yes  .... although, the Let is not exactly a big lump so with a welder and a good tool set i reckon it would be a faily straight forward project

I would not bother, much easyer to dump a T16 turbo in it, i was just pointing out that if he loves his coupe, and also loves vauxhalls, then perhaps a hybrid is the way forward :D

Just a quickie. What is the difference with a standard Leon and the CUP Cupra R?

Mk4 Astra is a good drive especially the SRi, but they are very common and they dont stand out like the Coupe. You made the right choice for you at the end of the day. The Astra is/was arguably a newer and safer car but that shouldnt always be a priority.

I vote the coupe. Reason being for me, the Astras a bit of a nothing car. Not sporty, not particularly good looking , not particularly economical, not particularly fast , handling is the most detached ive ever felt etc. Fair enough if you want to move forward, but try something else. Try something good. :)

Choice is yours at the end of the day mate. Personally i didnt enjoy my experience of my Astra coupe 1.8. I moved up from a 216 cabriolet to my astra, had the astra 3 months then sold it and bought my first ZR 105. Yea the astra was quieter, better built and more comfortable but in my opinion it was slow, boring and parts were expensive. £130 was cheapest i could find an altenator for :o and the ecotec engines eat sensors for breakfast. My 1.4 ZR was just as quick around the town as the astra was and cheaper on fuel.
