Hi All
I'm really having one of those days where i cant seem to decide, need your help.i know you lot are rover guys so this will end up you slating me but ive owned vauxhall since i passed my test in 2005.i had my chance with a coupe in august which is still going very well.but im swaying more to vauxhall again until i can afford a rover coupe turbo
how my car stands at the minute is
just a 1.6 coupe with a few different mods from standard
but ive been offered this,its a 1.6i astra mk4 5 door club(i think?)
im 23 and been driving 4 years,i admit i dont like the wheels on it so they would be replaced.im just thinking of a swop due to that astra being newer and more my scene.just relly asking for your opinions
cheers all
mark

We can't tell you what to do
You like the Astra, you get the Astra. You like the Coupe, you keep the Coupe.
The Astra (IMO obviously) is a bit of a blandfest. You see plenty of them around. Seeing a nice tidy Coupe is quite a rarity around here.

Gotta agree with Andy it doesn't come any blander than a Mk4 Astra...except a Mk3 Vectra.
Just research converting your Coupe to a Turbo, been done enough times.

Yep, IMO mk 4 Astra's are like Nike trainers, bland and very common with nothing special about them. All IMO.
At the end of the day, its entirely up to you. You're not going to get a balanced view on here as such, being a MGR enthusiasts site, likewise you'd just get the opposite extreme on a Vauxhall site.

The only thing the Astra has is practically. But if that's not needed, keep that very nice tidy coupe. As long as there is nothing major wrong with the coupe, I would keep it.

Ok, well the Astra is better in terms of it's a newer, possibly safer and more well equipt car. It's all very boring and ordinary. Look how many Police mk4 Astra's you see around too, they are everywhere. There's nothing sporty or stylish about them and the build quality is not anything special although reasonable.
Your 1.6 coupe, is a much more stylish car, and has a high quality look and feel to it. Sure i don't doubt that younger guy's 17-22 ish would maybe prefer the image, and might have issue's with driving an older Rover. The same would also equally apply to a Ford or Vauxhall of the same age, but maybe more so as car's like the Calibra look alot more dated than the Rover coupe IMO. I don't even like the Astra mk4 Gsi turbo coupe, as it just looks so ordinary and does not stand out or attract any attention, like say an mk7 Celica or Hyundai coupe would.
I'd say keep your coupe, it looks in very good condition and if you want more power, then a turbo conversion on a late solid shell that's likely to be in far better condition than the average genuine turbo coupe, could be the best way to go!
There is nothing really wrong with Vauxhalls overall, but the only car's that i would rate enough to be tempted into owning would be either a mint Mk1 Astra, (theres loads of style and potential in them), or a Mk3 Gsi 16v. Some folks rate the Cavalier GSi 4x4, but i just couldn't!

I had a 1.6 Astra Club for a while.
I had to drive with the windows open to stop myself falling asleep. Nuff said.

When work sent me to Leicester for 3 months I had Astras rented while there, back in 2003. A 1.6 sport 3 door then a 1.5 sport 5 door. Didn't like them at all, used to enjoy driving the 9 year old 100,000 miles 214SEi I had at the time every 2nd weekend when I came home. I found the Astra to be a bit tail happy, which was fun for scaring co-workers but not confidense inspiring (and we all know how bad a standard R8 handles on the bends).

Your Rover looks really tidy - they always do look great in silver when in good nick. But as has been said, cars do not come any more bland than a mk4 Astra, especially in 'fleet car silver'.
Fair enough of you want something newer, better equipment etc, and the Astra is by no means a bad car, just very, very, ver....... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Your coupe does look very, very tidy. Got to be well above average for the year. For many reasons, I'd have the 1.6 coupe over the 1.6 astra. If you want a turbo astra, I'd just keep the 200 until you can afford the turbo astra, and then make the change if that's what you want (or get a turbo 200 coupe - whatever you fancy).
Seems the 1.6 coupe is a stopgap for you, can't see the point in swap it for another swap gap car.

if you are into vauxhalls then the above is best advise i think no point swapping a nice sleek coupe for a car with to many doors

Come on mate! The astra is about as fun as a day in tesco.
In 2006 I made the error. I bought a brand new £12,500 Corsa with all the gadgets. 1.4, 3door, black......I got it on a 3 year finance.
1 year later I was bored. Yeah, a new car is great, but it can't be fiddled with, it doesn't give you those dark evening torch light fixes and every other car you see is the same. So I gave the corsa to me mum and bought a 1995 Coupe 1.6, then a 1999vi and I now own a 1995 coupe turbo.
It's rare (not on here, but when driving around), it's fast, it's so much fun. Yeah, it's 15 years old, but I'd have my coupe turbo over a newer Astra any day of the week. I get ripped for driving a Rover by the lads, but when they get p*ssed on by a 15 year old Rover turbo they soon shut up!
It's up to you, but for me it's Rover coupe 1, Astra 0!

I like that a lot.
Put the Astra and the coupe next to each other and see which one you desire the most.
Corsa/Astra = puppy (whimper, whimper, roll over, play dead, tickle my tummy).
Rover Coupe - tomcat (come near me and I'll scratch yer fuc*ing eyes out !!)

I gotta agree.
No idea what they're like to drive. I'll freely admit that.
But how a car looks is the first thing you get to grips with, and for me, if I walked outside my door every morning and found that sitting waiting for me, the sound that would come out of my mouth would be a very small, disappointed 'oh.'
Someone was having a very off day in the design office when they designed that.

Most Mk4 Astras are sheds matey, you choose wisely!
I hear the GSiT is pretty quick in the MkIV chassis but lacks in the handling dept but each to their own as I've neveer driven one. I had the 1.8 SXi and it to nearly sent me to sleep on long drives and was about as exciting as watching snow melt. Saying that it did get me from A to B which is all I wanted at the time but i'd never have another and that's not me talking as a Rover fan boy. I part X'd it against a Laguna II which was a far superior car IMO but then again they're not everyones cup-o-tea either

The EcoTech units are known for being burners especially the X16 and X18-XE units commonly found in the Astra "G"
Did it have moon mileage or did it look fairly clean under the bonet? Who cares, you didn't take the shed on

if you can afford a panty astra turbo, you can afford a very very tidy rover turbo
or even a mint often overlooked t16 nasp, surpriseingly fast with good low down grunt, would be a massive improvement over the 1.6 k16,swap over your interior, wheels etc, and save about a grand if you want

Trend setter - not trend folower.. Astra's are ... beige, totally in comparison to the coupe.. in fact all of the Vauxhall range i believe if you give me the values i could find better and more intersting vehicles for the same if not less money.

If you want a Vauxhall, grab a scabby looking corsa for a few hundred notes and dump a C20Xe in it.... my mate has just done that, 1.4 badges and steel wheels

runs off the clocks at 135 mph
