Catalytic converter's for Cash

Post by james3990 »

Does this still happen, whats the going rate for an exhaust converter?

I've got a 216 and 220 converters to bin but just seeing if I can get anything for them.

If original they are worth quite a bit. You'll be suprised!

Depends on the internals of your catalyst converter and how much life is left in it. I sold 2 "half cats" for £30 off a VVC and one "quarter cat" for £10 to a local scrapyard.

So scrapyards will payout for these?

How do they determine the condition of them :?

They're not interested in the condition, it's the metal inside that they want, they pay a lot more for original cats than aftermarket replacements because of the better metal content of originals.

Scrapyards do pay out for these yes. They put a wee guage thing in to help assess how much of the internals are left. From this they calculate a value. In the case of the 1.8 VVC - £20 for a full catalyst - £15 half catalyst and £10 for a quarter catalyst.

If it's a genuin original cat they pay around 35-45 quid. If it's an aftermarket cat they pay 2quid.
I've weighed in loads.

I go straight to the company that buy them from the breakers, a genuine can get you upto 100 quid, breakers/scrap yards no longer pay cash for scrap, the law changed recently and they are not allowed to, but they can still pay cash for cars as they are less likely to be stolen with the v5.

I got £60 for a 600 diesel cat. The later MG-R cats are tiny and worth naff all. 25/ZR ones are worth about £20 tops.

You'd only get pennies if its aftermarket.

The 216 converter is a Unipart, the 220 is a geniune converter I believe.

I'll see what I get offered for them. I'll aim for offers around £50 for them both.
