On the way back to uni last tuesday Jonny had a rear blowout on the M10 motorway just after overtaking a car doing about 65mph. The car went sideways and hit the start of the inside lane motorway barrier on the drivers side.
Basically it was like hitting a ramp. The car rolled six times and he was stuck upside-down for 2 hours while the emergency services got him out.
Not a cut on him but he has a broken bone in the base of his back from the intial impact. Tuesday he was moved to Stanmore Royal, which is a specialist hospital for spinal injuries for an operation, at 5mph under police convoy.
Luckily Jonny's quick thinking, he breathed in and pulled the seatbelt as tight as possible and let go of the wheel and held onto the seat before impact, no doubt this helped reduce further injurys.
Yesterday he had an operation on his back, and now has a 6 inch titanium rod in his back bolted to lumber 1 and 3. Lumber 2 suffered a compression wedge fracture. He is on the way to being back on his feet now, but it will take a long time before things are back to normal. He is currently recovering in Stanmore hospital, he should be able to move at least, as he has spent nearly 10 days lying on his back.
Here are some pictures of the car.
Obviously it could of been a lot worse, especially if someone was in the passenger seat, he had only just dropped me and a friend off at the airport for our week long holiday.
