RIP Charlie's Scrapyard (kettering)

Post by Punx0r »

It's been there for years (decades?) and it's been closed since shortly before christmas. I'd been told that it was recently open by someone who drove past, so I was happy again.

But I read in the local paper that the land is being developed into warehouses/business park, and is currently being cleared

Goodbye maestros, metros, Mk1 800's, SD1's :( They used to keep the cars for ages too. You could go back months later with a car in mind and it'd still be there with the correct bodyshell and colour.

Cheap were the prices, £5 for a brake caliper & carrier, £5 for a pair of 285mm Mk1 800 carriers, £10 for starter/alternator. 5 quid I paid for a set of M-series rods.

He only really liked to work in units of £5. Bits of trim etc worth less than that, you usually got for free.

They'd always turn a car over for you if you asked. Even if it meant moving several other cars to get to it, and you only wanted a fiver's worth of PAS pipes.

I'm not aware of a decent yard anywhere nearby. The one in northampton seems to be run by pikey's...

People don't realise who enviornmentally friendly scrapyards are. It's purest recycling!

I don't blame the guy for selling. It's a fair sized plot of land (most of it was unused), so I bet he'll be retiring on the proceeds 8)

I've seen that scrappers, and it's a fair old size.

Lots of scrappers seem to be shutting. All the ones in Preston sold up to Auto Recyclers, run by the council. Basically a bunch of beers whom if you want anything you get ripped off on price and they usually detroy half the car and rip your part off.

I have to go to Bolton for a decent scrappers. :(

Peterborough's are all together within half a mile, but they have uber quick rotation of stock.

Birminghams full of scrappy's. hence the good prices as they all compete. nearest one to me though is the only one for miles around and he knows it. hence he charges a small fortune for everything. my mate went in the for a standard ford steel wheel rim and he wanted £35 for one with a nearly bald tyre and it was dented :o . i usually travel abit further into birmingham and use hoppers in witton. Really cheap and i get on with the guy that owns it aswell. Always have a laugh with him probably one of his best customers, im in there about twice a week getting partss for me and my mates, family. lol

Ta mate, I may have to check that out :) The only other one I know of is Desborough airfield, but haven't ever been there. There's also a place just outside Raunds, which is actually closer to me than kettering, but it's an off-the-shelf place and a bit pricey. I much, much pefer remove it yerself.

On wheels, steelies were practically free at Charlie's. I'm guessing because of the disposal cost. Alloys were a flat rate of £10 each. Several times I asked about 800 alloy wheel nuts and was led to a "decontamination" building where the floor was covered in hundreds of wheel nuts. The bloke could tell which were which and would give you a handful, no charge. Not bad considering they sell for a few quid each on ebay.

I know I'm going on about this, but on a warm sunny day I can spend hours wandering round a scrapyard, noseing at all the different cars. Damn good fun when the weathers nice :)

guess its because people prefer to buy bits online, ebay etc..

could this be the start of the down fall of scrappys?

I doubt it?

I recon its cos,

a) easy to get money, buy a new car, get it serviced propperly, no fannying about with oily hands in the rain... We are a generation of want everything 5 minutes ago, people dont have the patience these days, want everything fixed 5mins ago...

b) old skill tradition is dying out. 50 years ago, most fathers would show their sons a thing or two around the house/car, these days, things arent like that. Cars are getting more complicated, electronics and other barriers prevent easy repair yourself (like torx bolts and such stupid inventions). Also, stricter motoring laws and increased costs for 'interesting' vehicles...

now if you sorn a car, you have to get it trailered to an MOT place, then insure it, then wait for those documents (whilst its still stored a the mot garage of course!), then retax it, then you can drive it! In the olden days, no such worries, drive it around , probably wouldnt get in trouble... Wouldnt risk anything like that myself, as a young male, my stereotype preceeds me.

c) land prices are worth so much more than they were, this means an appraisal of any business changes, meaning its not worthwhile sitting on a million pound plot, when your only making a pittance, and would earn more with that mill in the bank (without even working)....

I guess ebay does take some sales away from some yards, but whats a computer cost? nothing, if some scrappys took the initiative, they could tap into ebay themselves (some already do).

:o nooooooooo  used to go there all the time when i was a bit younger getting bits ofr my old novas etc

To be honest yes it was a big yard but the problem was everyone and his dog knew about it and whenever they got anything ahlf decent all the good bits were snapped up

If you want a good scrappy not a million miles from charlies where the prices are cheap and most of the cars still have all the decent bits left goto............

yeah right like i'd reveal that

I prefer the slightly dodgy ones - one near me is supposed to only dispose of cars and not sell parts. They have a rule there where you only pay for anything too big to fit in your pocket :D Always cheap too as its cash.

The worst one I went to was in Essex (a good few years ago) - the bloke wanted £80 for a metro carpet :o i did pay that, but i had loads of stuff rolled up inside it to get my monies worth!

Just found it on google maps. It's a 50 mile round trip, so I'd have to get quitye a few bits to make it worthwhile. I'll certainly check it out though. No popping home to get the torx bits or circlip pliers I forgot though!

I think I'll be going over to the desborough one on saturday. Thanks for the tip on prices... Is it the yard that had loads of volkswagen bits and burnt down a few months ago? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

Might have to get the yellow pages out...

Scott, the law allows you to drive without tax and mot to a prebooked appointment at an mot centre. I thought this was the same with a SORNed car. If you know different I'd be very interested to know...
