Choosing a phone..

Post by PJW »

The age old question. Im due a new phone. I currently have a Nokia E71 and to be honest im really happy with it, but its on its way out after 18 months of use. I dont want an iPhone.

My current choices are:

Blackberry Curve
HTC Wildfire
Samsung Tocco
HTC Desire
Sony Ericsson XPeria

I realise that they arent brand new phones but i dont want to be paying £50 a month. Can anyone give me ideas on the above? At the moment im looking at the Blackberry, but i like the XPeria for the QWERTY.

I'd go for the desire over the wildfire.

The wild fire, is a smaller cut down version of the desire.

Love my desire

Ive just got a Desire HD and based on that id highly recomend the Desire (I did see one online test rate the desire higher than the HD)
Its the best phone ive ever had. It has made me feel like an old fart tho as its way beyond what my idea of phone was.

Only downer is the bluetooth is rubbish, cant pair my external gps rx for accurate lap timing :(

I read that the iPhone doesnt even have bluetooth enabled? How crap is that!?

Isnt that phone totally massive though? I remember seeing a HTC in a phone shop and it was like a kindle.

The desire HD is rather large, the normal desire is pretty much the same size as a iphone 3GS.

I'm very pleased with my Desire.

It does pretty much everything I want it to, isn't too big and I have it on a £20pm contract. Not used a wildfire, but given that Desires are cheap/free on low cost contracts now I'd say Desire all the way.

Battery life is crap, that's the main -ve, but that's same as any smartphone. I have used a couple of blackberries and personally dont like them. Keys are too small, screens are small for the size of the handset.

Had a couple of people with iphones even admit they may get an HTC next time as it is impressive what it does for the money.

Cool, the only thing that puts me off the HTC handsets is their touchscreen, im used to a qwerty keypad and even though ive got sausage paws i manage to get away with it quite well.

If you want a slightly smaller phone, then try the Samsung Wave.(3.3 inch screen)
Same cpu as a galaxy s,but with Bada o/s (based on android)
Both the Wave and Galaxy s have an absolute stunning screen and the touch wiz interface is absolutely brilliant.

Slightly off topic,my dozy daughter got a brand new galaxy s for xmas, she somehow managed to drop it down the bog on boxing day !!!!!
She left it for 2 days, with battery out.
It fired up straight away, with no glitches at all and is working fine...impressive.!!

It's quite easy to get used to tbh. It's a querty layout anyway and even bigger in landscape.

Or, there's the desire Z which has a slide out keyboard.

Anything but the I phone will be fine unless you plan on buying a bini cooper and man bag and shop exclusively in topman, iPhone all the way in that case.

I recently purchased a new phone with t-mobile and got the New HTC Desire HD, i were gonna get the normal Desire but the kind gentleman(manager of the store) showed me his Desire and put the HD up to it.. and wasn't that much difference in size, yep it has a slightly larger screen 4.3" to be exact. and the Screen is HD. I've had it now for just under 2 weeks, and i must say it's a brilliant phone.. I do say IMHO it's better than the iPhone...

Yup, having been here since the start with Android I'd say the 'Z' is the best device I've used so far. The 'Z' is also marketed as the T-Mobile G2 as a replacement to the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream). Its got the 2nd gen snapdragon 800mhz which is better than the 1st gen 1ghz snapdragon in the other smartphones. As a result it is better on battery too. I have mine overclocked to 1.8ghz and underclocked to 245mhz on an on demand profile and with a 245mhz profile when the screen is off. It results in great battery life and overall performance. Only -ve with the 'Z' so far has been the hinge, which although built well the spring isn't quite strong enough to hold the screen open if you lie down and hold just the keyboard. Youtube it to see what I mean, in everyday use this is a non issue really and you shouldn't consider this when evaluating what to go for. One thing I'd say is to go into your local phone4u with the dirtiest old brick you can find in your dusty old drawers and try each qwerty for ease of use then when you have decided trade your brick in for £50 cash back.

Alex, have you got yours rooted, clockworkmod recovery, cyanogenmod 6.1.1 and overclocked? If not then I'd recommend it as you will see great performance and battery improvements.

That should suit you then, stretching something small over something big (and I'm not talking about condoms).

If you want a qwerty the Desire-Z is the phone to get. Awesome screen, great keyboard and its fast. Its Android to so automatically wins against the iOS devices and those 'black berry' monstrosities.

I run an iphone 4 for personal use and it's the first smart phone I've ever had, and I can't imagine buying a different phone. I'm a sucker for build quality and the Samsung Galaxy efforts feel a bit light and tinny for me. The HTC'S don't feel to bad though, but if a handset costs £600 like a 32gb Iphone 4 does, then I want it to feel like £600. I also have a Blackberry something or other for a works phone and can honestly say it's totally cr*p. The screen resolution is woeful. the video on motion is woeful, the camera is woeful, the buttons to fiddly, the handset is to slow and the screen is to small. I don't get Blackberry's at all.

The problem is the build quality comes at a huge price. No access to the battery and no SD card slot.. The iP4 is basically a Samsung Galaxy S with a smaller LG screen all sandwiched between 2 layers of (non gorilla) glass, which isnt that hard to break..

Ive just got a Samsung Galaxy S2. Is awesome. Its very light, its the thinnest smartphone in the world, and the most powerful (Sorry Motorola, your Atrix ad is wrong..). It will play full HD MKV files without conversion and can be connected to your TV via HDMI and play them at full resolution.
