10" Tablets

Post by Sheaf »

Ok.... thoughts?

I'd looked at the 7"/8" ones but now decided on a 10" one.

I want something decently powerful just so it runs smoothly and doesn't annoy me.

I have as my main options -

Nexus 10 16GB - £320
Nexus 10 32GB - £390
Galaxy Note 16GB 10.1- £340 (But has SD card slot)
Sumvision Voyager 2 16GB - http://www.ebuyer.com/489484-sumvision- ... cycvoy2101 - £190 with SD card slot.

I was pretty sold on the nexus (I have a nexus 4 phone, like the stock android setup etc) but the Note has the S pen (not sure how much I'd need this), the nexus doesn't have SD card storage and £390 is a lot to pay just to get 32GB.... there's always USB OTG with the 16GB one and most of my media is on my network for when I'm home.

The sumvision, I've used the Voyager 1 a lot as work have one, it's so much value for money. The 2 must be quick (the one does most stuff fine tbh). It's got an sd card slot and everything. And HDMI out. Seems it's a lot of tablet for the money.

The Nexus 10 has the silly high res screen though.

I'm torn. Mainly between a £190 cheap one which looks like it'll do most stuff well and a flagship device which is twice the price. Is it worth it? Will I even notice a difference?

Then there's the fact that the nexus gets the updates straight away.....

ARGH

Went for the Nexus 10 16GB in the end.

Figured I wanted 'vanilla' android rather than some Samsung version and wanted a decent screen so the Nexus was the answer.
Also decided that although 32GB would be better, out of principle I cant pay £70 for an extra 16GB, it's ludicrous. So, if I want loads of media I'll just plug it in the side (given that a 32GB flash drive is £15).

£329 delivered for a top spec tablet with an ipad 4 beating screen. Now, just got to wait for it to arrive.

Missed this as I don't frequent the forum as much any more. How are you finding it?

I'm still using a 2011 Motorola Xoom 32gb WiFi. Had it 2 years nearly. The gorilla glass is bullet proof. The amount of times it has been launched/dropped and still pristine. A new ROM every now anthem keeps it fresh. Prob better devices out there now but it probably still shits on the iPad.

Yeah, the nexus is very good. The screen is lovely, very high quality image.
The sound is also very good, other tablets I've used have rubbish rear facing speakers but the nexus has decent front facing ones so watching stuff on it is really good.

It plays MKVs fine, outputs to the TV, does everything I want.

I downloaded Nexus Media Importer so I can mount USB sticks (or even HDDs) onto it and copy/watch videos etc, so the internal storage isn't really an issue.

There is some extremely slight occasional lag though, something I guess I wasn't expecting. However I've seen this on every tablet I've used, including ipads. I don't mean meaningful lag, I mean milliseconds when you go to scroll a PDF or something, although once it's started scrolling it's fine. Maybe it's something that you have on everything.

I bought a case for it, £13 leather one off amazon, which has the magnet to put it into auto standby when it's closed.
Using this, keeping it in standby and picking it up to look on the net or just use it for odds and sods in the evening (no heavy video work) the battery lasts about a week.

Watching videos it'll last maybe 8 hours, possibly a little less if you're outputting to a TV (it displays on the screen AND on the TV when you do this).

If I were to choose again, I'd either go for the Nexus again or I would possibly be tempted by the quad core Sumvision tablets they've recently released on ebuyer. I dont know if they'd be as good but they'd be bloody close and they're under £200. That's quite a significant saving.
They also run a rather stock version of Android, which is what I like.

Although, I am getting updates straight away with the nexus... running 4.3 now.

Basically, I'm completely happy with my choice, I am just wondering whether some of the budget ones may in reality do everything required too. But they may not be build as well etc mind.

One thing's for sure, I wouldn't go for anything with another manufacturer's 'tweaked' version of android. After using HTC, Motorola and Samsung android branded products, the nexus devices are just so much more straight forward to use.

I get the lag occasionally although the ROM I'm running at the moment is very smooth. Battery life is very good here too.

I don't have a problem with branded tablets though as I always run custom ROMs or am I missing your point?

For now I'm going to stick with the Motorola as there is no real reason to replace it. Maybe look for something in December with birthday/Xmas money.

One thing, this does have rear facing speakers. The sound quality and volume are good enough although it increases when you cup the speakers with your hands so it shows how much volume/quality is being wasted.
