VHT paint advice please guys

Post by Vard66 »

Hey guys.

I'm in the middle of doing a pair of V8 rocker covers with VHT (both brand and description) paint. I'm looking to sand back the ridges and polish them before I hit it with a couple of careful coats of clear to seal it.

Is it advisable to wait until the colour coat is completely dry before attacking the raised sections with a flap wheel, or can I have at them at the ~3hr touch-dry marker?

If you rub them back first and get a good shine to the ridges the paint wont stick as well, can then either very carefully wipe the paint off the ridges while its still wet with a rag and thinners or give it a quick sand and polish once dry. Is it the wrinkle finish your using?

Edit: my mate did this cam cover for me with wrinkle paint and polished the ridges beforehand wiping the paint off wet

We been using that paint for years on the SS396 and even the ZR good stuff, the way we always do parts like that is to paint at all then using cellulose thinners on a rag wipe over the parts you want to remove paint off and it just lifts straight off. Last thing I done was the ZR coil cover....

I cut the ridges back with a flap wheel before painting, but mainly to see what it looked like before taking the plunge and spraying them mad-rhubarb-orange. Hopefully that'll help a touch.

I'm using VHT Chevy Orange, non ripple finish, but it is coming up very slightly orange-peely, which I'm actually liking the look of rather more than a sheer gloss finish, so that's all to the good.

When I did my cam cover I rubbed the raised bits down with the rest of it, cleaned it and masked it up before respraying the main body, masking was easy as I just cut with a sharp knife the raised part after sticking the tape on (not sure if that makes sense lol had a few to drinks)
