Well just seem it at my local Vue on a preview day. Absolutely amazing film. Sure its rather Titanic like in its story, emotional and somewhat predictable, but the visuals are just stunning, simply stunning. It does take about an hour or more to get used to the 3D, because there is so much 3D effect in the film, but once you do its fantastic, and the ending is really worth it!

I'm waiting on the film version of Battle Angel Alita which Mr.Cameron has supposedly been making for years.
That too was touted to be a whole new film experience and change cinema etc etc

For me Avatar feels like a cinematic event rather than just a film. I think the last time i felt like that about film it was the LOTR trilogy.

Shhhhh dont mention LOTR's if anyone over hears you they'll want to re release them and in 3D! At least this time when I fall asleep it'll be harder to tell with some specs on :)

Am I the only person who saw it and thought "Meh"

Most people are all wow'ed by the effects than the story line anyway. :|

Thing is why should Cameron go too far from the formula that worked so well on the biggest film in cinemas modern era (Titanic)?

Both Avatar and Titanic share the same idea, give the single guys a visual feast, or at least an impressive visual display, give the single women hope and salvation, and give the couples the cheesy romance. The result for Titanic was $1.8B worldwide take. Avatar looks like it will take the biggest second weekend (US) record from The Dark Knight, it may even be bigger than its opening weekend which is just not done these days by blockbusters.

It will have the biggest take this year, and may even go over $500M US domestic, $1B Worldwide seems certain. The Film is going to be a phenomenon simply because word of mouth is fantastic for it, unlike for New Moon and Transformers 2, which both had terrible word of mouth and only made money because of fans.

avatar did have a lot of advertising i think, people just started talking about it as it was his first film for x amount of years and he did titanic which made x amount of money...

i dont think avatar is worthy of all the attention and all the records its about to break, its cirtainly not the best film ive seen and i doubt i will be as interested watching it on regular dvd minus 3D.

but i will openly admit i went to see it to see what the hype was about so im contributing to the success of it lol i dont think i would have bothered if it was just your regular one

Going to see Avatar next week. I've heard the story isn't overly exciting, but the effects are stunning, so I just want to see it.

Saw a small thing on 'click' the other day, about 3D films, was quite interesting that a 3D film can be boring in 2D. Apparently they cant do such fast scenes as in 2D as the viewers eyes cant cope with it as well so they have to slow it down, so when it comes out on DVD it'll probably be a bit rubbish if the story isn't that good.

Ah well, I haven't been to the cinema for some. Perhaps they should have advertised it during Mythbusters on Discovery? ;)

For those who follow such things.. Weekend Box Office estimates are in for US takings (they are more interesting than ours frankly). Avatar takes $68.3M US domestic. Thats by far the biggest ever 3rd weekend (previous record was $45M) and is the biggest January weekend ever (beating Cloverfields opening weekend). Its dropped just 11% since its opening. By comparison New moon dropped 70% in ONE week.

Avatar has just gone over the $1Billion mark world wide in 17days, thats a full 10 WEEKS faster than any other film, although to be fair only 4 other film have managed it (The Dark Knight, Pirate of the Caribbean 2, Return of the King and Titanic).

Titanic - 1,842.9
ROTK - 1,119.1
POTC: DMC - 1,066.2
Avatar - 1,022.3
TDK - 1,001.9

I saw this in 3D and the visual effects are just simply stunning. I saw some trailers for toy story 3 and Alice in Wonderland both in 3D which looked great too. 3D cinema is definately the future.

There some fast paced action scenes at the start which I found just too much to absorb. It must just be the way it is with your brain struggling to take it all in.

Oddly I still haven't heard or seen a single advertisement or mention of this film. I've seen trailers for Sherlock Holmes, and heard plenty of people talking about it and Transformers 2 (I realise that's fairly old now), but not a peep about Avatar.

Have you got Sky+? There was something on the anytime about Avatar. Apart from that, where have you been the last few months?? This film took about 4 years to make including development of the cameras. I think post-production was 18months :w00t:

If you do go to see it there's some advice to get the best from it.

Sit in the center, about half way back. Too close and you'll miss stuff and end up cross eyed, to far away and it looks less intense. Too far to either side messes with the effect as well.

Focus on the middle, not the foreground or background, if something is blurry but you try to look at it because its 3D and near you it will look odd and ruin the effect.

The first time i saw it there were normal 2D trailers first, this was fine but didnt prepare your eyes. The second time there were just 3D ones, this helped a lot and i could get into the 3D much sooner.

One other thing, in the ads before the film was an ad by Sky saying that existing Sky HD boxs will be upgraded to support 3D soon, although i assume you'll need a new 3D TV to make use of it.

The 3D part yes you need a 200HZ tv and a pair of stereoscopic glasses and of course a 3D movie, Blu ray is to start including 2D and 3D on the same disc and the PS3 is backwards compatible for it, so games will be getting the same treatment at some point. If you look on the back of the Avatar game case it says stereoscopic 3D ready but the tvs that will be released this year i doubt will be cheap :)

A small update on the scale of Avatars box office performance.

Its now passed $2Billion world wide and will be $2.1B by the end of the week. To put that in perspective thats as much as Independence day, 2012 and The Day after Tomorrow put together. By the end it will probably also take more than when you add in 10,000BC and Stargate as well! (All Roland Emmerich films of course).

The total at the end of this week will be about as much as both Transformers movies WW gross and Armageddon added together (All Michael Bay films). When you consider Transformers 2 was the biggest film of 2009 until Avatar it's especially crazy.

The total world wide take for all 3 Lord of the rings films (the biggest WW trilogy) is $2.91Billion. Avatar has a chance to take as much on it own. Its a slim chance but it might just. Either way its taken more on its own already than all 3 Matrix, all 3 Jurassic Parks and Star Wars 4-6.

No other film in the modern era can touch it and older films like Gone with the Wind and The sound of music have a massive advantage. Many many re-issues. There were no videos or DVDs then so a re-issue was the only way to sse the film. GWTW was re-issued at least 8 times with the later version remastered as wide screen and stereo. In their initial releases (about 3 years in the cinema without a break), neither came close to Avatar in terms of inflation adjusted gross.

I saw Avatar last week, wouldn't be a big cinema head at all so the fact I actually went is an indication of the hype. Thought it was only fair, very forgettable film, certainly won't get it on DVD nor would I want to see it again. The likes of Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Gladiator, Shawshank Redemption, Cinderella Man etc I could watch hundreds of times.

3D shmeedee

+1 As it wasnt like when I came out from watching the matrix for the first time. That just blew my mind. Which gets me thinking! That should be redone in 3d!

There is a big push for 3D now. A lot of films due this year are getting a conversion to 3D. The last Harry Potter and possibly Iron Man 2 as well.

There is also rumour that Titanic and the star Wars double trilogy will be converted. Personally i think Peter Jacksons directing style would work really well in Avatars 3D as well.
