1-series are RWD, hence the massive tunnel and minimal rear leg room
Epic fail, only seen one numpty with snow chains so far, on a road that I'd driven up and down perfectly easily earlier in the day

To be fair, it's probably going to help him steer and brake, which are arguably more important than traction when accelerating. I'd have thought most of the accidents in the snow are caused by lack of front wheel grip than driving wheel traction.

I don't think that was the owners idea, he just thought it was a FWD.Sheaf wrote:To be fair, it's probably going to help him steer and brake, which are arguably more important than traction when accelerating. Which is why RWD cars should really be running chains on all wheels rather than just 1 axle, and why FWD wins yet again.Sheaf wrote:To be fair, it's probably going to help him steer and brake, which are arguably more important than traction when accelerating. Re: Oh Dear Oh Very Dear
I remember Reading some sevey about cars and 83% of 1-series owners belived it was front wheel drive
Re: Oh Dear Oh Very Dear
Just goes to show that if that most people can't drive for logger, or never drive "properly".

afaik all bmw's are rear wheel drive. I dont think they even made a 4 wheel drive except on the X series jobbies.

I hear where your coming from, but trust me, in a FR car especially a BMW in this weather NEEDS chains on the back. Already had to rescue a friend of mine in one, and another in an Omega.Sheaf wrote:To be fair, it's probably going to help him steer and brake, which are arguably more important than traction when accelerating. Re: Oh Dear Oh Very Dear
Yep. Front engined RWD cars are terrible in the snow. The front wheels dig in due to the weight of the engine and the rear wheels can't digg in and get traction due to no weight over them. IME the problem in snow is not lack of steering but lack of traction.MarkCoupe wrote:I hear where your coming from, but trust me, in a FR car especially a BMW in this weather NEEDS chains on the back. OMG that's epic!
To be fair, the guy videoing it should really have gone down and given the poor woman a hand, not stood there laughing. It's not really her fault that she's not got any experience of the snow, it doesn't come up much!

It's her fault that she left it in gear. Common sense should of prevailed. I still can't stop laughing at that.

Saw a octavia estate with the chains on the rear yesterday, (wasn't the 4wd version).
And helped push a 1 series out of snow today on a hill in epsom, i got stuck in a transit with traction control on, and he was having grief too, fair play he helped push the transit and i returned to help push the 1 series.
Snow its all good fun lol.
