New car tax rules mean end of transferable tax
Has everyone seen the new car tax rules for October? You basically can't transfer car tax, and if you sell the car you have to claim any calender months back.
Then if you buy a new car you have to go online and tax it immediately. This means if you swap a car or sell/buy in the middle of the month you have to pay for that month twice!
Makes me mad. What happens when they mess the direct debit up? What happens when they don't tax the right car? Bet it means a price increase too.

Re: New car tax rules mean end of transferable tax
They are looking at pro rata refunds for mid month sales/refunds. Anything else would be very unfair and when you don't actually have a tax disc in your car it's going to need the DVLA computer to be spot on (which it may be but it'll still be run by muppets).
I think it would be a good idea to have the system allow you to tax for any number of months at a time so in theory be able to get 2 years for a discount.
What about the MOT too ? If your MOT expires mid month will the DVLA stop taking payments until it's MOT'd again. It's not against the law to have a non MOT'd car at the roadside but not being driven if it's taxed and insured (or is it ?).

If they do the payments by the calendar month you want to be buying and selling cars at the start of the month really. As you say - all this is on a reliance on the DVLA computer being correct. how many clamps will be fitted due to errors?
I can see some plus sides of it - like being able to tax over the phone etc - but there seems to be more negatives. Im willing to bet they are increasing the rates to pay for the new system too.

Pretty sure its not an ongoing tax,
You take it out once, just dont pay for it in one go.
So aslong as the vehicle has mot and insurance at the time of taxing you are ok.

Surely just buy and sell with the tax on?
I never get the point of selling a car (privately) and claiming back the tax, then the next person taxing it... surely just sell at a higher price with the tax?

THis is what the thread is about, Its not transferable.
You HAVE to return it. You CANNOT sell it with a car.

Government just screwing us out of money, when things are rough who pays the most? Drivers, smokers and drinkers...

Re: New car tax rules mean end of transferable tax
No it seems you have to stop the tax the moment you sell, then the moment you buy start the tax on the new car. I presume you cant buy or cash in part months, so in theroy if you buy/sell a car on the 15th:
You lose 15 days tax from the sold car (can only cash in whole calendar months).
You lose 15 days tax from the end of the cars new tax as you dont get a full six months if you tax more than two days before a new month.
Gets.

Re: New car tax rules mean end of transferable tax
When selling or buying a car just delay sending the log book off until a couple of days before the end of a month, include that months tax in the sale.
Job done.
At least that way you can get the thing home without sorting tax out there and then for it.

Re: New car tax rules mean end of transferable tax
I can't find the source for this story. Can anyone share it? Went I taxed the TT without the need to show the insurance certificate (can't see any complaints about that....) I sled about this and the guy in the post office denied it. He may be wrong but I couldn't find anything to confirm.
