Contract Upgrade Time
Well it's time to renew my contract and can't decide which phone to go for...
Narrowed it down to :-
Nokia N96
http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/speci ... /Nokia/N96
Samsung Pixon
http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/speci ... sung/Pixon
And the,
LG Renoir
http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/speci ... /LG/Renoir
Anybody got any of these or have suggestions? Good Points, Bad Points etc.

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
with o2
HTC diamond....known as XDA ignito on o2
£20 a month
600 minutes
1000 texts
free evening calls
free calls to any other o2 phone anytime
unlimited data usage
awesome phone even if not brand spanking new anymore there's still nothing significantly better out at the moment..it wipes the floor with the iphone 3g and is normal phone sized (that's a preference for me not necessarily better)
anyways whatever phone you get make sure you're getting a good deal on the actual contract..got exactly the same as above for 2 colleagues and they were over the moon..best they could come close to was as that but at £35-40 a month so be hard but be polite and know what you want... let them know that you know what they should expect to give you for your money.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SAWMa1JorNE
there's possibly the even newer all singing dancing model out but am unsure...it's basically a PDA with all iphone features and I've not had a single problem with it...so so much software and firmware upgrades available out for it too.
Best phone i've had hands down.

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
I've just got myself the Pixon. Seems a good phone so far. There are a few little things which I dislike, such as the Hold button to deactivate the screen is raised rather than flush or recessed. Meaning that it gets pressed in your pocket by any change/car keys etc, then when you pull it out you have been on the phone to someone on the moon for the past half an hour or half your settings are completely different. lol.
The layout is good though and its easy enough to use, looks pretty good too I think.

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
I previously had samsung tocco sgh-480 with the 5Mp camera..... got it for this reason
the HTC has 3.2Mp camera and takes far far superior pictures...it also doesn't pause for 5 seconds or even any length of time while taking them.
I'd say honestly get to a phone shop and try before you buy...nothing like getting an all singing all dancing new on the market piece of what turns out to be crap after you've used it a week.

STOP
N96 is poor compared to N95, N96 is slower and lacks hardware video acceleration.
C905 is riddled with problems, even more so than the k850i!
LG Renoir seems to be a safe buy, of all the phones i recently looked into, it is the only one that isn't really bogged down with hundreds of negative reviews

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
guess it depends on what you're looking for in a phone but it honestly has to be the HTC diamond for something normal sized that has it all.
The fact that firmware is so easily replaced with so so many revisions with anything you could possibly want really hits the spot...check xda developers website also to see how people rate the beauty.

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
currently paying £35.00 a month 600mins 1000texts 1mb downloads.
When i upgrade will get a free bolt-on which will be unlimited texts so the text side of it doesn't matter anyway. Free internet would of been a nice addition though, but need the unlimited texts desperately.
Had another company on the phone today, which triggered this thread, they rambled on saying they could offer me this that and the other on orange which was so much better than o2, basically said they could offer me 600mins 1000texts and a free samsung pixon, ''which o2 cannot offer you'' well on the phone i looked into it and pished on their parade and said i could get exactly the same without even doing the usual threatening to cancel. Plus i like o2, been with them for about 5 years on both pay and go and pay monthly for the last 18 months.
Basically i want a phone that can text and call (obviously) but has some nice features to keep me occupied, decent camera would be nice save me carrying a camera as well. and dont want something i need to have a shopping trolley to carry it round with me or a railer on my car
Suppose internet feature won't realy matter if i can't con them into giving me the free internet as well because i wont be able to afford to use it haha

I've currently got the K850i and i think its a great phone, superb camera, good media player.
Never had a problem with it but one of my friends has had endless problems.
Guess its just pot luck really. Dont go for a Nokia tho, or the Tocca. Poop!!

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
I realy like my n95 as i love gadgety phones and i was thinking of going for an n96 come upgrade or a n95 8gig.
That htc diamond does sound good though, windows mobile so there will be plenty of sat nav programs for it, touch screen (somthing i miss that i had on my se p800 that i wish the n95 had) sounds pretty ideal to me.
My gf has got a viewty and hasent realy had any problems with it other than with the stylus not staying fully extended.
The quality seems fine, hardly any signs she's had it for 12 months.

trust me they will budge don't be aggressive but be firm, mention you have 2 friends on the deal I outlined above on the phone you want....
often they'll say they can't match that and then say it was an online deal nothing special or for limited time...they'll put you through to reticulation dept or something like that.
Then bargain like crazy be firm but not aggressive and be polite...I guarantee you can get a much much better deal.
With the economic state at the moment they will turn cartwheels to keep your custom...you're the man with the money, you're in charge...don't forget it.
Re: Contract Upgrade Time
That is so true i have done it many many times and they will by the end of the call be begging you to stay.. the key to it is who ever you get through to say that you want to be put through to disconnections, they will then question you as to why and you tell then you paying way to much and your not happy and want to go to another provider. They will bend over backwards to keep you.shen wrote:With the economic state at the moment they will turn cartwheels to keep your custom...you're the man with the money, you're in charge...don't forget it.
Kyle: i would go for something like the samsung i8510 they are lovely phones (if you can convince them to goive you one)

I've had other HTC/XDA phone pda combos...the buttons are so small they're unuseable...no phone with keyboard is worth having...you can't exactly knock out an essay with a needle can you....the smallest useable handheld I had was the HP jornada and sadly the fastest one you can get is a 233mhz effort with a 33k modem .. not ideal.
If you want notebook with phone potential I say get an HTC diamond and one of these babies....

full keyboard anywhere with all office aps, sat nav, any pda software you wish (Playstation emu etc), full internet capability
alternately just get a tocco and cry until your contract expires

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
I've been offered an upgrade on my contract. What I've been offered:
Nokia N96 - Really disapointed in the quality, feels very plasticy compared to the N95. Suprisingly expensive too. Had to negotiate to get it for free.
Sony Ericsson X1- Like the build, like the screen resolution and qwerty keypad. On the downside the keys are a bit small, the camera is poor and I have heard they can be on the slow side.
Samsung I900 Omnia - Big screen, good looks on the downside the screen res is low and only touch screen.

Re: Contract Upgrade Time
I've got the N96 and to be honest it's not a patch on my previous N95-1.
With Voda; 500 Min, 100 Text + Unlimited Data for £30 Month. If you're not already with Voda; don't bother; Coverage is rubbish!. For instance; Central Birmingham, In a pub; No reception at all; Orange, O2 have coverage, but not Voda.
On to the phone; Sent the first one back as it was amazingly slow. Got the 2nd and it was instantly better; Then upgraded the firmware and it's better still. Still slow and a bit temperamental compared to the N95-1 on the most recent f/w.
Camera isn't as good as the N95; Pics seem to be a bit blurred and you need a really steady hand when taking a pic.
Also; N96 has built in VoIP removed which was a selling feature with N95. It has Mobile TV (DVB-H) built in; but we dont broadcast that over here and unlikely to do for some time. 3G/HSDPA web browsing seems slow; Not quite up to my expectations.
Would I have another one? No.
I was considering either an iPhone or a HTC Touch Diamond; Didnt do the iPhone as was put off by the £35/month tarrif/sausage fingers and didnt do the Touch as it seemed a bit crappy. Would consider an iPhone in the future though. Am still considering eBaying the N96 for an iPhone.
