Pride of Longbridge 2018 Rovertech stand and meet!

For things that don't fit into a category. i.e. non-motor related subjects.

Pride of Longbridge 2018 Rovertech stand and meet!

Post by vinny19791 »

So after discussions with Baz over the past few months we have decided to try and organise an actual Pride of Longbridge Rovertech meet in 2018

We have no excuses, granted we have dwindling numbers of active members and a dwindling number of Rovers to pick from.
But we are or claim to be the greatest Rover forum on the internet, with the smartest minds to boot.

One of the complaints on here over the years has been about the lack of meets, especially nationally and the lack of a Rovertech stand at any known event for the past god knows how many years.

So we are proposing a big meet in 2018, at cofton park, Longbridge to coincide with the POL 2018 meet. No excuses, nothing half arsed.

We are looking at a very small fundraiser to raise just a couple of hundred quid, and we plan to raffle off a double room at bromsgrove travel lodge, or premier inn, whatever as a prize, also hoping to gather a few other raffle goodies, I dont know Klinger head gaskets  , t-shirts, power steering pipes, anything rover related for a laugh, forgot to mention trophies for various categories, we also plan on getting a decent banner made up so we feel like we have a presence. Not sure on bbq if we can, if not some grub of some sort!

Baz is also planning on being over for this which I for one am pleased about as many of us havent met him, and many havent met me, so thats comedy gold right there, some say we have a face for radio, but thats our next venture  I find it amusing that I've been active on here like many others for years, yet can stroll around this years POL anonymously, which is a shame.

So for now this is a place for ideas, thoughts, support and what not,

Anyone up for this or not, we feel this is our last chance to put up or shut up and we have 11 months to prepare our excuses

Go....

There has always been a moan here and there about the lacks of meets, so we are calling those members forward to assist in making this work. there is no chance in hell Vinny and I can pull this off on our own, if that is what anyone is thinking. Obviously being there on the day for support is great, but some other bits and bobs need sorting out, like how we get the cash to purchase a few things to give away and so on.

Like I said, we are well aware of the history of meets, but that doesn't mean we can't change our ways. There is no point in folk saying the forum is dyin' and so on, if they are unwilling to do anything about it. We need the positive vibes, and help. Half a dozen of you helping out on this to start with would greatly aid progress.

I agree, the best thing to do is just put all your efforts into a PoL stand/annual meet/event as
the local stuff is well and truly dead, seen a few people over the last 3 years try to get local
stuff going, they get about 3-6 people then it fades out the next meet, shame really as there
are plenty of us about and still active.

I don't have a Rover and don't want to park to close to one in my VW as don't want to risk the rust jumping onto mine [emoji38]

On a serious not the few times I organised Trax there was always a great turnout.

I personally would not worry about prizes and all that it just adds more unwanted stress and agro just have a basic meet keep it simple and see who turns up.

It's very easy for people to say yeah I'll come and you never end up seeing them and the difference being when I organised the RT stand at trax people had to pay in advance so they was less likely to drop out and none did.

It's never easy organising a meet I know what it's like and the headache behind it but one thing I will say

If you do not plan on going 100% don't even bother to comment and say you going as it's unfair on the guys organising it it's there time and effort being wasted which is unfair..

For those that have met me in past was nice meeting you and those that haven't may meet me one day if there is ever anything here over in carrot crunching Norfolk area [emoji38]

Kudos to all you guys for continuing with RT and keeping the fires burning :) it really is a testament to the community you have (even with reduced numbers)!

I still regard many of the Rovertech RR Days, Castle Combe track days as some of the best 'like minded' social get together I've experienced over the years.

Not being cheeky, but...

just to clarify, in the past various members would state their discontent at the fact there are no meets. I feel it was considered a task for the admin, mods, what have you, to sort this out. That is the impression I got, however the reality is, most of the mod and admin are not interested in getting their hands dirty or have lost interest. That is fair enough, they are entitled to do as they wish. No hard feelings, life goes on.

It is at that point, the idea of a meet for POL 2018 was floated and it was put into the hands of the forum, as a community, to make it happen. I recall requesting help and/or assistance in doing so, specifically from members who often griped about having no events.

I got one singular member willing to help, which was Vinny (see the first post in this very thread). Realistically and with all due respect to the man, Vinny and I were not going to be able to pull this off. We needed ideas, enthusiasm and most importantly, cash. At the very least, cash for a banner. If I lived in Brum, I probably would have forked out for the banner myself, but I don't. To get myself and the Coupe to POL and back at this time will sting me to the tune 7 or 800 quid, never mind a banner.

It is easy to pin the decline of the forum on other people. I am man enough to say I griped enough about Jon/Null not being active, but what really would have changed if he was? is the success of the forum purely based on the fact that the forum is not mobile friendly? Surely if the forum means that much to existing members, they would hop on a bloody laptop or PC? Is this the way it is always going to be? One head man at the top of the chain who has to take all the crap or all the glory? I am totally against the idea of having one man in charge of this place, it is meant to be a community and I am sick to the back teeth of getting PM's from various members who are only interested in running the forum themselves and getting all that 'founder status'. It takes no founder to set up no frigging meet or event, it takes members and commitment.

I will still do whatever I can to assist in making POL 2018 happen, even if I can't even make it, but c'mon guys, stop asking about the frigging thing and do something about it instead.

The issue you have is without the boss mans say so (john) not a lot can get done.

I'm sure, if he was willing to drop/sell the rains to the site, more things would be possible.

I for one would be willing to pony up if needed.

With all respect, the only restriction with not having Jon around, is that he is the only one in a position to upgrade the forum. Everything else we could wish to do, wouldn't be a problem. If Jon was active right this second, it by no means implies he would wish to get involved or taking responsibility for a meet/gathering, nor would he be obliged to, that is what members are for. It is now I'm thinking Jon is an easy target for the lack of enthusiasm by members in general. He is not Jesus.

It don't take founder status privileges to set up a gathering. As Marty has said, he has organised meets before. I used to do the same myself over here on occasion when I was a member of .cult/.org, and I was just a lowly user of the forum. We managed to make banners, get fed and enjoy a day together. Steve Childs didn't organise it.

All it was going to take was a good 30-40 odd members to pledge a tenner or so and we could have had a whale of a time, made for the members, for the members. Waiting for Jon to come and do the bull work is not going to happen, and for anyone who won't consider getting involved unless they took over the reigns, well that is just selfish. "if it isn't my game, I ain't playing" isn't in the interests of keeping the forum alive. Personal interest in ownership will never be in the best interest of the forum.

The MG & Rover enthusiast community.

The exposure we could have gained for the place by attending POL with a common goal would have been great for the forum.
