Insurance time - MG ZR turbo ?

Post by xr4x4 »

Hello,

Time has come to insure my zr turbo, was looking for recommendations / prices.

I have gone to co compare and quoted as a standard 1.4 at around £300

Contacted Chris knott, just waiting for a reply.

MG ZR MK2 2.0 turbo
42 year old
Driving 23 years
10 years no claims
Fully comp

Thanks
Paul

Adrian Flux did the best price for me. Around £450 I think, I'm a little younger than you with slightly less years driving experience. 9 years ncb.

I put it on limited mileage though but did have to state use as SDP.

They did want to know all about mods though. Had to fill in a form detailing everything.

Chris Knott were similar price but excess was higher so that swung it.

Could probably have got a better deal but got.bored with wasting my lunch times ringing insurers.

Ok thanks,

I've just had them email me back saying they can't insure me?!

A phone call is in order I think!

Yeah, I just called them direct.

Judging by the lack of replies I'm assuming no one else insures their modified Rovers :P

Just done my insurance on my new Mk2 T16 with all mods declared with Greenlight - £385 fully comp! Got 6 years no claims.
Was with Flux last year and was £375 fully comp with them but they wanted £450 this time!!

I always jump ship every year, always get a far better deal!

Best way to do it, have you declared your zr as a turbo?

Classic policies quite often don't allow you to use or earn NCDs.

So they're less useful if your car is a daily driver.

I`m up for renewal on the 1st July and went, as I always do, the Confused.com route.

Declared transmission, turbo and engine mods and best quote came back at £367.51 with Swinton.

Still shopping around and want to talk to 1st Direct who insured me unmodded last year.

46 years old, 9 years NCB, ZS 120 with ZT turbo engine in it...... soon.
MG`s.... who knew?

Need to get mine declared for piece of mind from getting gip off the old plod as far as I know it's just a case of sending a cover note "from a garage" stating the new engine and that it's safe for the road? Do you need to tell them the engine code and let them know where it's come from?

I assume you mean notified to DVLA. If you haven't already declared it to your insurance company, you are not insured.

Notifying DVLA is going a bit OT, but they will definitely need to be told the engine number/code of the replacement engine (engine number is on the V5C, and one of the things that the police DVSA look at to verify a cars identity, and you might have problems in the future if you come to sell the car if the engine number on the V5C doesn't match the engine in the car). They do sometimes also require details (VIN) of the donor car, which some people have found problematic when they have acquired the engine from a dismantler.

The letter 'from a garage' that is required is an engineers report, which basically states the work that has been done and verifies that the installation has been done correctly and is safe and legal.

I've just been looking at this year's insurance for my old man, completely standard, VGC Rover 45 1.8 Connoisseur...

General quotes, using the comparison websites, then Aviva, Direct Line, Zurich came out at£300+. Bog standard, 10yrs NCB, 46yrs old... Renewal with Swinton was £460!
Last year's premium was only £265, and this year my Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo is coming in at £242.53 - so I don't think it's me becoming the bad risk!

I've got mine with Adrian flux, I'm quite a bit younger with less no claims than you but for my turbo'd 25 gti I've paid £300 for limited mileage and all mods declared. That was after a bit of bartering as well, when renewal was due I called them and basically said if its any more than 300 I'll leave it uninsured. So they came back with 298 and some pence but I only use mine for track days and I've got a trailer so it doesn't need to be insured.

i can get away with saying I've turbo charged the standard engine because displacement hasn't changed. If the numberes don't match it must have had a replacement in at some point

Good call Robson

I once had a 620 Si with the ti engine and had a bit of a bump :annoy: the insurance came back to me saying it had the ti engine in and was listed as a Si so said it must gave had a engine change that I didn't know about :mrcool: they made me pay the extra what it would have cost with that engine lucky it had just renewed! So was about 20 quid!

Well..

After some ringing around, some time wasting and some compare sites.

I went with Adrian flux, £340, fully comp, 10 years ncd, protected, all mods declared, with a guaranteed value.
