The MG X80

Post by IrishRover »

Perhaps some of you will say duh, but this is the first I've heard of this car although it apparently was released in 2002. It's a 2+2 seater coupe with rear-wheel drive and 260 to 385 bhp depending on which V8 engine you choose.

See here: http://www.autointell-news.com/european ... x80-01.htm

Is this the replacement to the 220 Coupe that we've been waiting for? How have I never heard of this? Is it just cos I is fick or is it because this was never actually released to market?

Image

It's a fine looking car and reminds me very much of something from the back.

Image

It says there will be (was) a roadster version released in 2003. Was this the TF?

Well I was going to say that's a pity, but then I had another thought straight away: It looks nothing like the SV, and as I say, that's a nice looking car, especially from the rear. Wouldn't it be great if they could use this to bring out a more affordable performance car just like the coupe was when it first came out? What if they put a successor engine to the T16 turbo in there and kept the rear wheel drive? What would say 250BHP (thinking of a 4 cyl turbo) in a classy looking car like that with rear wheel drive do to dent sales of Imprezas and Evos for people who were sick of them and wanted something different? John Towers, are you listening??? :D

I love the shape of the SV, my mate had one for a while as a demo type car and i drooled over it!
They sound lovely too, but maybe a bit quiet for my liking :D
It was trailered to the show, and back, so could only go round a carpark in it(a very large one tho) Will start saving my pennies for the R version, might afford one by the time there classics!

Look at the roofline, door handles, identical. X80 was too 'girly' for the market it was aimed for hence the butch look. I think Rover need to concentrate on building cars they can actually sell rather than what a few people desire, if you know what i mean

If anything like the Coupe was to come along, it would be on the back of the new medium sized car (previously known as RD60) which is currently due Q4 2005.

It will be a hatch to start with (as was the MkII 400 at launch) with further derivatives to follow.

Interesting Stu. Got any pictures or other details of this car?

MGTurbo wrote:Look at the roofline, door handles, identical.

Yeah, I can see that actually - and I hope those aren't Punto lights!! That'd be much worse than the Mondeo lights on the Noble!

X80 was too 'girly' for the market it was aimed for hence the butch look.

Really?! Funny that, because some people here on another thread were saying that the 220 coupe looked girly as well. I don't agree though that just because something is graceful in design that it is necessarily "girly". I also don't think you have to make something "rude and in your face" to make it a man's car. While I do like the SV's looks (and I can see that it is did start out as the X80 and basically got a massive bodykit attached to it!) I do think it is a bit vulgar. That's not a criticism in this case though, because its looks match its temperament.

I also think there's room though for a more subtly styled car with more graceful and flowing lines like the X80. Actually, what could be a better outcome than to have the X80 become the Rover 200 coupe MKII - it must be still on a design shelf somewhere. All I would change would be the front to harken back in style to the original (well not the really old P5!) coupe.

As you say, Rover do need to concentrate on the cars that will make volume sales - the "bread and butter" cars. However... think of it this way: It's accepted that the flagship models bestow an image of desirability down to the more common and base models. Even if you don't sell many flagship models, their very existence helps sell the basic "volume" models. Also, with the amount of Impreza WRXs on our roads these days, you could nearly consider that market to be a volume market anyway! I'm sure there are plenty of people who want that kind of performance, don't want the predictable understeering of constant all wheel drive and want to have some fun with RWD, don't like the looks of the Impreza and don't like the image they have. What would they go for? I reckon this could fill a market segment that has been created by Subaru due to their very ubiquitousness!

John Towers - would you like to pay for my flight over to your next board meeting? :D

It is a cut down 75 chassis. MGR are doing their usual good job of keeping details to themselves.

You can see that it's the same car, developed a bit. However the X80 somehow looks like a TF in the front pic, and an aston martin in the rear pic. Very odd.

Much prefer the SV. Proper mans car.

The X80 is basically a Qvale Mustanga or somthing.. MGR took so long doing something with it though releasing as it appeared there really wouldnt have done alot in the market. Inside they went mad with the SV and really tried to make an impression, unfortunately its now competing in the wrong sector of the marketplace. far to expensive

Start saving your pennies ....hmmmm.... that reminds me..

As a very small boy back in the 1950s, I saw my first ever Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gull Wing Coupe and fell in love with it. The car in silver was outside the Dorchester Hotel in London - the 300SL was a loosely based road version of the car which won Italy's famous Mille Miglia with a certain S. Moss at the controls ....

The road car was a mere 4,500 quid back then. about the price of two semi-detached houses in most UK towns at the time. So, I started saving. Today, a tidy 300SL Gull Wing can be purchased for a mere quarter of a million quid - nice ones rather more...... so, back to plan B .... my trusty MG Montego Turbos.... :)

Yeah John, I believe that gullwing Mercedes 300SL is Mark's dream car - and I see the point you're making - there's no point in waiting for some cars to age in order for you to be able to afford them as some cars actually appreciate in value!

Yup and hear it is :P

Strangley this car seems to have lived in various incarnations: Detomaso Mangusta, Qvale Mangusta, MG X80 & finally the SV.

I think the X80 looks a lot better than the SV, TVR and others build rather brutal toys, doesn't mean it has to look like its been on Steroids.

A little too 'Lax power' for my liking.
I'm a big believer in "walk quietly and carry a big stick" Q car stylee.

I know nothing of new car prices, whats it competing with, power and price wise then?
