Swindon rover meet, moved due to requests new topic made

Post by Rich_1988 »

Ok Right following on from a previous thread/threads in gallery, we are just really gauging the interest at who would be interested in meeting up to show off/meet other people with 800s or rover in general in the swindon area because their seem to be a few of us around!, at the moment im just seeing who would be interested, it would be on a saturday or sunday as most people work during the week. looking at meeting up at a pub and having a pub lunch then pottering off for a casual drive then make a final stop chat a bit more then head our seperate ways, (all very vague at the moment as I said just gauging interest)

Its a 1.6, but will still show you up seeing as mines like half the weight :P

I'm back from uni from mid-March til early April if I have no job.

And yes you can make a poll, you have to start up a new thread though.

And may I suggest somewhere scenic like the White Horse or somewhere, very fun roads to drive around and a huge carpark with an ice cream van

I think one white horse at least is a must, they are all generally on big hills which tend to make for good fun up and down and usually as you say a big car park at the top where we can take photos and maybe even get ice cream :P!

Will most likely be mid march time, as it seems like a reasonable place to put it, the exact date will depend on when people can be free for it, even if we only get three or four people it should still be a laugh, have a little drive take some photos have some lunch etc.

Liking the idea of taking the route up over some downs... usually good visibility down the hills if they're slightly longer, too, so it means you can see if there's nothing coming and get an opportunity to open it up and use the road! Plus of course, the views from the tops of most of the downs in Wilts are lovely, so when we do get to the top and maybe park up, it'll give us some nice backdrops for group photos!

Wrong! Lots of sharp corners, dips and ridges on the roads, only overtaking spots are effectively in the villages. Very fun (in a dangerous "I'm about to die" way) drive in a small light Coupe, insane in a big Vitty :o Doesn't help that I know the road like the back of my hand though, and know where to brake etc etc

Over the Marlb downs is usually pretty good and open, views wise. also, so are some of the lesser used roads out from Marlb to Baydon... Tbh I won't really be pushing it anyway. I wasn't pushing it earlier and a chicane on the way to Alton Barnes nearly caught me out...

Plus there shouldn't really be much need for overtaking if we're just doing a drive out. I won't be in competition with anyone on roads I don't drive very often...

well I dont think anyone is going to be racing too much anyway, probably a bit of spirited acceleration every now and again ;) I think you would be suprised at how nimble my vitesse actually is!, the lowered stiffened suspension and strut brace really makes a difference

It's just that the sheer tonnage of crap he keeps in the back weighs it down to counter it!

Plan of action atm - meet up somewhere that has a fairly large car park, and from there, roll out across some downs and along some fast straight roads, out to a nice pub somewhere for a pub lunch, then back a different route perahps?
Anyone any ideas to add?

There is a need to overtake when you're stuck behind a pair of pensioners doing 15mph in a 60 limit on a straight

Yeah, I just meant senseless overtaking. "Less near death experiences, more sensible driving..."

I hasten to add that I'm all in favour of big speed, ruthless acceleration and ludicrous G forces, because the above just makes me sound like a tiresome nag.

After a little discussion, Rich and I have decided on the 15th, as it's good for both of us. We'll post more details about the route ideas once we've had a good think...
