Just meet up in the Uffington White Horse car park :) Then maybe a drive to Wantage as theres like over 10 pubs around the market place in the centre.

Sounds good to us... Rich has been banging on about the road out to wantage for a few days, actually. We may wanna go further out than Wantage itself but that should be a good part of the route.

Ok guys, I've just been looking at the map, and I reckon this is a good initial structure for a route. Not much more than 50 miles each way, inclusive of some B roads (though more can be added), inclusive of the White horse and the downs surrounding it, the nice road out to Wantage, and also inclusive of some larger, wider roads for more comfortable cruising.

Last time we did this, we used a checkpoint system so that if anyone gets lost we can catch up every fire or ten odd miles, and so that if anyone doesn't want to go the full course of the drive, they can peel off at any of the checkpoints and make their way back.

Start at Uffington White Horse Car park.
B4507 --> Wantage.
A338 --> Hungerford (LARGE CAR PARK/ PUB CHECKPOINT SOMEWHERE IN HUNGERFORD, POSSIBLY THE RAILWAY TAVERN?)
A4 --> Marlborough.
A346 out of Marlb, becomes A338 (LARGE CAR PARK/ PUB CHECKPOINT IN EITHER TIDWORTH OR SHIPTON BELLINGER?)
A338 --> Shipton Bellinger/ Cholderton, connect to A303.
A303 Westbound --> Stonehenge. (CHECKPOINT IN STONEHENGE CAR PARK)
A360 --> Devizes.
A361 out of Devizes, join the A4 --> Marlb. (CHECKPOINT IN WAITROSE CAR PARK, THE BUS BAYS)
A346 out of Marlb up to Swindon.
A420, --> as far as the B4000.
B4000 --> as far as the B4507, and back to the Uffington White Horse Car park.

Anyone with any input regarding where we could make more checkpoints, feel free to pipe up. Also, anyone who feels there is a great little pub that just HAS to be stopped at anywhere along that route, everyone loves pubbing, so speak up!

I'm on Pay As You Drive car insurance and a jobless student, so a 50 mile route is a bit out of the question atm, especially so as my engine seems to be over-fueling!

How about Uffington Horse, then go to Abingdon via Wantage. Wantage is a bit crap for parking as there aren't many places to park, and what with the new town centre it'll be pretty busy on a Saturday. Abingdon on the other hand has plenty of parking and also plenty of pubs (many cheap ones too!).

Oh and my attendance is entirely down to whether I even make it back to Didcot from Brum after the "incident" the other night when the car tried to kill me twice lol.

That's what Rich keeps saying, actually. Or, whining, anyway.
Ok, looking at a mappy now, how's this -

Uffington - B4507 to Wantage,
Wantage - A338 south to the M4
M4 east from J14 to J13,
A34 from J13 north, break off to do the A4185 (jsut to get a little more B road in), back onto the A34 and A34 north to Abingdon?

From there, we can then A415 it out until we join the A338, head south back to Wantage and then back to Uffington.

Shorter, improvement?

Or Uffington to Wantage, then to Abingdon, then the long winded way involving the A34 and M4 while I go back home and sleep :P

Wump! What's the point of going out for a drive if we just go as directly as possible from A to B? And yes, I like sleep too, but I'll just stock up on that in the few days beforehand, so I've got a slumber surplus!

As much as I wouldn't mind just driving around all day, I can't afford it due to my total lack of any money until April, and my stupid insurance combined with my thirsty engine mean that I simply can't go on a 100 mile roundtrip :(

Point well made and accomodated. 36ish odd out to Abingdon and 12 odd back to Uffington surely can't be too much?

Ok well i have to agree with a short trip for the first one as im spending around the £400.00 mark on tax and insurance this month and the ti is not going to be the cheapest of cars to run.
Please bear in mind i have to budget as i have a family etc.
But i would love to come out to uffington, have a pup lunch and take a few snap shots of the cars etc.
Btw if we end up at the M4 juction 13 or what ever it will be a quick easy run home so i faver this idea.
Hope this sounds ok :)
Dont want to spoil it for anybody eles.

Uffington, the Abingdon via Wantage, or if you want a more scenice route then I suggest via Wantage, Didcot, Appleford, Culham and then Abingdon, and end up at the Nags Head pub (my old local when I was at College)?

I'll be up for something more elaborate in the summer when I have a job (touch wood).

Alright, so basically same route but with the 338 and M4 cut out. Coolies, we'll let you finalise the route, as you know it somewhat better. So long as it doesn't put us on any of those daft 50 restricted roads I'm alright with it!

I agree with Din and stef, a big reason for this is so we can check out each others cars/take pictures have a pub lunch, a short drive is best so sounds like its settled :)

Right. Din, Stefa, I just clocked that we've not set a time to meet up. Rich and I have just discussed it, we reckon that if we want to drive, then eat, we'll have to meet up fairly early, say 12ish, as it won't be a pub 'lunch' if we wind up eating at 5 or so, and then all the pubs will have the expensive menus out!
As far as the Nag's goes, I have no clue - so Stefa, any idea when they'll take in their lunch menus? (If it is the Nag's Head you were thinking of leading us to for a lunch...)

Reckon via the villages it's more than 2 hours-ish from Uffington horse to Abingdon? I wouldn't guess it was more than three quarters of an hour myself, but of course it's not a drive I've made before, so I've no firsthand of it...

Cool. So if we say to meet in the Uff horse car park at about half twelveish? That'll give us about an hour and a half odd to ogle each other's cars and have a bit of a chat before we roll.

Pub lunch then roll back to Uffington, and then split our different ways. Except that because you're going to Swindon, we may go the same way back anyway. Whereabouts in Swindon are you?

*Edit* If we're thinking of lunching before 3, that'll give us two hours odd to get back to Uffington and then back across to Swindon, so you should be fine, really.
