Possible petrol shortage?

Post by BlueRover »

It was reported in the Metro News today that a major refinery in Scotland was going to be taken offline while there is a two day strike. The run-down is necessary in advance due to safety issues. It's possible that after the strike, it will take a while to get it running at capacity due to the nature of oil refining and there were reports of some people in Scotland panic buying.
Just how far south this is going to affect things is not known but it did mention northern England too.

There has been panic buying here yeah, they are saying to just buy petrol as normal but of course everyone sees a queue and thinks they had better get in it. And brim the tank of course, so many stations are dry

Not so much a shortage but the price variation .... has prompted me to only half fill the Rover, so that if I see somewhere that sells cheap stuff, I can top it off. :|

I noticed the cheapest unleaded near me jumped 2p yesterday and i was forced to pay 111.9 for unleaded today because i was a bit short and had to use the nearest pumps. Its terrible. However i just got a new job paying 3.5K more and i wont need to pay for travel anymore so by the end of the year i can return to a 20mpg turbo rover again!!

Still about the 110p / litre mark here - boy am I glad I learned how to drive slowly and smoothly in the 3.0 - 27 MPG combined at the moment. I did go through a phase of about 21 MPG not so long back before I changed the tires

No mention of shortages here locally or in the oil-related publishings we get every day in work :)

Just went to fill up, 107.9! I remember when everyone was kicking off over fuel hitting the pound mark, now its steadly rising and no one seems to care. Suppose theres sod all we can do since we rely on the stuff so much.

Petrol station was suprisingly busy, I ended up tanking the car for the first time simply cos I cant be arsed filling up for the next couple of weeks. Getting dreadfull economy though, just under 100 miles from £20 worth of fuel, from a 1.6!

well thats it really beginning to take a bit more effect here, all the stations around here have a £20 limit on all fuel transactions - 1 local garage shut - the other has half the pumps shut, bigger stations are mobbed!!!

this is just a total carry on - this is an excellent time for any workforce to strike!! - since mr Brown seems to like u - turning!!

i really think all of this over the last week certainly has highlighted brown as a very weak leader.

this would have never have happened while blair was in power!!

sorry - ill take my political rant hat off now!!! lol

TBH, if there's one thing that will make motorists panic-queue, it's telling them that despite the biggest refinery in Scotland closing, there's no shortage! 8)

I filled up last night on the way home from work, but when a mate told me that he saw people panic buying I thought I might as well top the car up.

I'm not one of these people to think "OMG FUEL SHORTAGE!!", but I travel 40 miles each way to work so can't be without it.

If these muppets are going to run the stations dry, I want to make sure I've got enough to get me to work and back before they do so.

I imagine most 'muppets' are doing exactly the same. :P

I think this time rather than panic buying people are just trying to save cash as the prices ill no doubt rise during the strike.

Lol believe me the last thing I want to get into is a political argument, I'll save my breath for something I actually give a monkeys about! :D I probably agree that blair was better than brown so far though although I wouldnt say he was a strong leader. Brown just seems out of his depth, he doesnt come across as the leader of a powerful country.

US outrage at 50p per litre fuel

People in the US are reportedly changing their holiday plans - after petrol reached the "ridiculous" price of up to 50p a litre.

The national average for unleaded fuel is $3.53 a US gallon - which works out at just over 47p a litre.

But the price in California, the most expensive state for 'gas' in the US, has reached 51p a litre with diesel even higher at 59p.

US motorists will get little sympathy from their British counterparts where petrol is well over £1 a litre and diesel around £1.20.

But Americans have long been used to cheaper fuel prices and the latest increases are reportedly hitting home hard.

Troy Green, of the American Automobile Association, told CNN that Americans should expect the price to go up another 25 cents over the next month and continue to climb over the summer.

He says rising fuel prices is leading Americans to change their vacation plans. People are expected to stay closer to home, use less expensive hotels, eat at fast-food restaurants and hunt for online bargains.

"It seems many American consumers are being hard hit from multiple directions, and their overall budgets are being maxed to the limit," Mr Green said.

The most expensive city is San Francisco where commuter Debbie Jasmin has stopped driving her gas-guzzling 4WD and started taking the subway to work. She's also curbed summer travel plans.

"I don't really think we have seen the worst of it," she said.

They really have no idea do they. Even when I first started driving back in 1999 and got my first car in 2000, petrol was ~70p/litre, more expensive 8 yrs ago here than it is there now, and they're complaining :o
