So last week some arse hole broke in to my house via a tiny window, cleared out the downstairs and took off with my keys and my car, which as I write this is, is still in the wind. No problem, thought I, as I can claim on my insurance.
Spoke to the insurance company, £750 excess - my fault - was trying to keep the premium down when I first bought the car. I never got round to changing it come renewal time, and from the conversation I had with the claims handler, i'm likely to get a pay out in the region of 2k. That means £1250. Seems straightforward so far- But here is the kicker. As I would also my 2 years worth of no claims bonus, plus have a claim on my policy, I am looking at a hike in premium of a grand if I was to replace my 75 with another one. As I had plans to change my car anyway, if I do end up getting the XJR I was looking at, it would be even more.
So- do I claim, get the 1250 and then pay a huuuuge premium or do I not claim, lose out on the 1250 payout, but retain my 2 years no claims and pay a lower premium (hopefully) in the years to come? WWRT do?

Re: Argh!! Insurance conundrum
hmmm, hard to say, an XJR isnt going to be cheap to insure by any stretch!
i pay 400+ on an x300 xj sport 3.2 , and thats with 4years ncb, im 25 and in a good area no points on license etc....
to help offset the cost of of the car, would the home insurance not cover anything about keys/lcoks needing changing on cars as a result of theft? Bit of a grey area i guess...
Which xjr you looking at , straight 6 or v8?

Re: Argh!! Insurance conundrum
Home insurance have sorted the home locks, but they refused to pay out for the locks on my wife's car (they took both sets of keys but left the car- its a nissan micra so I guess even the scum around here have standards
).
I'm looking at the V8, X350 shape. Had already been doing my homework and asked for a quote prior to my car being pinched and it would have been 1300 with two years ncb due to the area and 3 points on my licence, and I had budgeted for this. If I make a claim now and lose out on my two years ncb- it will easily be north of 2k.
Guess I should look on the bright side- had they have robbed me a month later it probably would be a Jag that they would have got away with...

Re: Argh!! Insurance conundrum
This is why car insurance just doesn't work unless your car is worth thousands.
Now you've told them about the theft, they may have marked it against you, and you're supposed to declare any losses when getting a policy even if you didn't claim for it. So you may end up with a policy hike even if you don't claim

As above, they will up your premium whether you claim or not, now you've told them.
My parents had a dispute a while back with somebody who rear ended them. The person at fault claimed it wasn't their fault and it basically ended up in nobody claiming. However my dad's premium, went up the next year, and I have taken him off my insurance too as it put mine up by £50ish, whereas before it used to bring it down by £100 - £200.

Cut your losses, dump the claim, and change insurance companies next time around.
Not sure why your home insurance won't pay out for locks considering your car keys were stolen from the house?
