It appears my 420T engine is interally fecked. I thought the oil burning and rattling was the turbo, but upon changing it the car is still bad
Tomorrow Im going to see my mechanic and we'll check the plugs etc to work out whats wrong.
Is there a place where I can buy a brand new engine? I dont fancy getting an old engine off ebay which could be nackered and Im willing to spend more than those engines go for anyway.
Rover themselves will definately be too expensive though.
Thanks for the suggestions, but Im not planning on running more power, just want the car to run properly and get me from A-B reliably.
I guess the dilemma is, do I fix this engine or get a different one. There was a brand new one on ebay for £700ish a while ago, that would be nice.
My worries about a second hand one is it could have the same issues, could have head gasket issues etc.
They are all going to be high mileage - possibly higher than mine which is on 107k
According to Practical Performance Car mag (July 06) Robin Hood sportscars have got brand new T16 turbo engines complete with new Turbo for £1000. Also got normally aspirated for £750 and FWD gearboxes for £250 or £350 with LSD again new. Can contact them on 01623 422286 or email info@robinhoodsportscars.co.uk. They are based in Mansfield near Nottingham.

You didn't say how much?
As far as I remember it was £1600 with a £400 rebate after they collected my old engine (so £1200 all in).

I think these might be training engines (you need to check). I've got one. But stripted it down to check. Found a few things like oils seals in wrong way round.

£1200 all in, and I don't consider that expensive for what it is.
It's not just a quick polish and bolt up again. They refer to it as "remanufactured", not reconditioned, and they're very particular about this because they say that what they do goes a lot further than a simple rebuild. Of course Rover are going to diss them because even if you can buy a new engine from them (which you can't) the list price was over 5,000 euros when I checked with them. I could order it I was told, but I may be waiting months or for ever for it to be in stock.
That motor off ebay is 300 quid cheaper yes, but it doesn't come with a guarantee and you don't know how long it's been sitting about.
The extra 300 quid buys you a year's guarantee which includes paying for any labour costs in the fitting of a replacement engine. Vege's customer service and after sales service is very good, and you probably won't realise how valuable that is if you never end up needing it!
Another thing to consider though is that if you are in a position where you need an engine as soon as possible you don't have to search scrapyards for one and then have the time spent having it rebuilt (or rebuilding it yourself if you can).
These are available right away and are delivered via TNT quickly and very well packaged to anywhere in the UK (or Europe).
